Not certain about the simplicity of developing a new generation of ZnBr flow battery, going from multiple to one membrane, multiple boards in theBMS to one, physical redesign to mass produce, making the production hardware etc, oh and engaging with the ZnBr producer to create the product with an additive.

Guess it was not simple, the evaluation mentioned did not pass muster on or more metrics, Tim walked back from the statement recorded in
PV Mag on 6 January 2021 (shown below) to that released on 29January 2021.

“Battery performance will be evaluated from a broad range of measures including battery efficiency, temperature tolerance and discharge curves, allowing Redflow to tweak and refine the Gen3 battery design, if necessary, before going into production in the first half of this year.”

“This is an important development milestone for Redflow’s Gen3 battery to become customer and production ready in 2021,” Harris said.

OK, the production target has slipped since 6Jan2021. But based on the estimate from the last full FY presentation, 7 months later, the introduction of the Gen3 battery is still on target to delivery, and in the ensuing months after that presentation we now have a multinational customer who has been very up close and personal with a 2MWh installation placing a request for a 5.5 to 6 MWh installation, to be based around the Gen3 battery.
