The MRI / MRX scan itself occurs ex vivo, but the transport and attachment of the spions occurs in vivo. If they make it to the tumour and attach in vivo, I'm not so fussed about the scan occurring ex vivo. If it's detectable post excision it should also be detectable in vivo. It's the transport and attachment in sufficient numbers that is the key.
