Dear Alex,
Hope this e-mail finds you well and you have had a good start to the New Year.

As a customer of Woolworths, I have seen some good progress with the sustainability initiatives and operational improvements in this area. Sustainability is a driving factor for me in my day to day choices and I was an active participant in the Redcycle program for soft plastic recycling. It is disappointing that my and so many other Woolworths customer’s effort was wasted, literally.

Given the recent collapse of Redcycle, it is apparent that there is significant soft plastic waste generated and no real sustainable solution to process this waste in Australia. Woolworths and Coles were implicated by the media as being major parties to generating the waste and should be somewhat accountable.

Given this bad publicity, there is probably also a good news story to be had. I am not sure if you are aware, but I saw that Woolworths in South Africa have set a precedent for recycling shopping bags into pallets for use in their supply chain logistics.

Like any sustainable manufactured product in the market place the adoption uptake often lags the conventional and the viability of such recycling business models can often be an issue. This is what we see constantly in the sustainable product market in Australia and is where Range International and Re-Pal finds itself.

If Woolworths was to commit to using recycled plastic pallets in local logistics and stipulate the preference for such in your supplier delivery packaging standards, I believe that sustainability could be achieved for a local 100% recycled plastic pallet made from soft plastic.

With this approach I believe that this could be an opportunity that can be developed and provide a good news story for both Woolworths, Range International and the environment in general.

I would suggest that you reach out to Range International and see what opportunities there are to develop further sustainability initiatives for soft plastic waste and logistics.

Good letter. not surprising you didnt get a reply. big corps have lots on.

i was kind of hoping all things going well, the Townville factory they bought could produce pallets here. its already doing plastic manufacture. they could bring an excess machine from Indo, as there not all being used, install it here.

was thinking this might be their next move. surely there's economies of scale and synergy between the 2 plants and it would not take much to convert the Townsville factory to produce pallets.

then attack the Aussie market, like the woolies and coles of the world. god knows how many other big chain co's here are potential buyers.

surely we're missing a huge mkt segment here.
