If you do any significant commercial research with any large multi-national company, and you do it without a proper contract in place, you're a complete dummy. It's just asking to be shafted. I've seen it happen repeatedly in my line of work. People get starry eyed when working with the "big guns", then they get dumped when the project doesn't turn out the way the collaborators expected. It's one thing when its only an individual involved, quite another when it's a listed company with shareholders.
