Chevron is preparing to bypass unions and put its pay offer to a direct vote of its Gorgon and Wheatstone workforce as industrial action at three major LNG projects edges closer, unions say.
The Offshore Alliance – made up of the Australian Workers’ Union and Maritime Union of Australia – was in an all-day meeting with Woodside on Tuesday in a bid to reach a deal at the gas giant’s North West Shelf platforms before 150 workers decide on industrial action later this week.

Workers at Chevron’s Gorgon LNG plant on Barrow Island off Western Australia have started voting on whether to endorse industrial action.
Sources said positive progress had been made in the talks, but there were still many outstanding issues.
Unions are expected to consult delegates and members on possible industrial action in the next two days.
Meanwhile, about 500 Chevron workers began voting on a range of industrial action options at the Gorgon and Wheatstone onshore plants and Wheatstone platform. The ballot will finish by next week
