For me I see the gas deal a material de-risk and nothing else, I have never been blind to the fact that the process to convert/separate the ore in to its components was going to be energy intensive.

Having control of their energy input gives them opportunity to manage from both a cost and sustainability perspective.

We are a long long way from industrial users being able to rely on renewable energy sources, this is going to be a case of breaking a few eggs to make an omelet and will likely be that way for the next 30-50 years to be frank.

One way I've described it to people is, think about how much heat it requires to melt metals, if the sun was readily supplying that energy to us we'd all be cooked.
