One of the other measures ECOWAS were threatening Mali with, was military intervention which is somewhat interesting as requests for assistance with the increased insurgencies linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State, have not been responded to. The 3 states formed a mutual defence pact (the Alliance of Sahel States) in September, the withdrawal from ECOWAS is the final step after previously distancing themselves from colonial French influences.
