Read an article in the Australian newspaper on 2 May entitled 'Graphite venture takes off'. Dr Fogg, a WA academic, has developed a method of creating synthetic graphite. His venture is called RapidGraphite. He claims 'we've established that graphite can be manufactured faster and cheaper than traditional mining from the use of low-cost materials like wood or plastics'. Not sure if it's relevant or not to your query.
