As best as I can tell, most days approx half the shares short sold are being brought back the next day. I am thinking a couple of things from this.
A broker is working a sell order to get the volume through to complete the order.
Also a run to close the gap and force sales from weak to strong hands before the real move begins. Could be in conjunction with the above and even to fill a buy order, the buyer is discerning and wants the best prices, the seller just wants out.
What if the gap is not closed, what does that imply.
For the Short Seller to make money they have to buy the stock back and return the stock to the owner. Implies the entity that lent the stock is a long term holder and does not care about price action ATM.
Super funds lend out stock etc to create income. The loaning entity can call back the stock at any time and the short seller has to buy the shares on market or loan from someone else.
The loaner receives an interest payment/income for lending out the shares. I am interested in setting my account to do this in the future.

    Thats what markets interesting.

    Kind regards
