I think it is a great idea to pick companies and industries that suit your personal trading habit and risk appetite. I personally do 75% ETF and 25% speculative risk trading, and I also have some mining explorers. They do look completely different! Mining companies go brrrr after news, then slowly drift down, and go brrrr, rinse and repeat. This is way less exciting, which suits me because I have a busy work life and would rather not have to look at the market every 2 hours in cases I'm down 70%.
