Don't the grades usually get better with depth?
Not necessarily. They are searching for and drilling through aquifers which contain the brines. The aquifers may not be 'linked' or 'connected' at differing levels, so the concept of the heavier brines 'falling to the bottom' through different levels of aquifers may not apply.
The best way to describe this would be to imagine they are drilling through 'pockets' (the aquifers) at varying depths which are (potentially) unconnected.
Aimo, of course!
