Hi ASIC,

I am happy to now have access to shorted stock data from your recently available Short Position Reports http://www.asic.gov.au/short-position-reports

I do find the figures a little difficult to believe however, yesterdays ASIC cumulative short report indicates that as of Tuesday the 20th of July, the security WSA Western Areas, a Nickel miner of which I own some shares, had dropped from a cumulative short position of 4,727,742 total shares shorted, to 1,673,733. This is a drop, from Monday to Tuesday of 3,054,009 shares.

The daily volume on Tuesday the 20th was only 637,580 units, the other trading days in this week were approx. daily volume of around 900K shares a day.

It appears the brokers may be reporting positions late, or simply making up the figures to further some sort of market manipulation.

Are you able to shed any light upon this anomaly? As a retail trader I would like to have faith in this information, and some assurance that the data is being reported properly.
