If you invest in S. America you get used to the regular reports of Armageddon if some politician from the loonie left takes control.

Well I have been investing there for 20 years with considerable success, and seen a few left wing governments but so far the thing which takes control and keeps control is 'economic realism'. A dollar gets what a dollar buys, and it is very hard to change that fact.

Pandemic, war, inflation - whatever happens the gold will still be there, in ever increasing quantity and its value inflates too.
