Macquarie are not in this position because of any "well played" strokes,moves or design by them to put "us over the barrel " as you allude.

They are in a marginally better postion than shareholders, but only because of the security they hold They are still at risk for substantial dollars. I'm sure they would rather have the project performing as per the forecasts that they funded the project on.

The cause of the Company's current dire position is the failure of the project to deliver anywhere near expectations. Only time will tell whether this position can be corrected.
