Things will change in the mining sector in the coming years.
According to Prime Minister Christian Ntsay, the start of around
twenty projects is planned during the five-year term.
Two of them could even start this year, again according to the head
of government during the presentation of the General State Policy (PGE)
to parliament last week.
It now remains to be seen which projects should begin in the coming months.
At the moment, very few are at an imminent start-up stage.
Among those that are already on the fire today is the Ranobe Toliara
ilmenite exploitation project by the Base company. Moreover, during the
passage of the executive before the Upper House on Friday February 2,
the senators did not fail to raise the case of this project which the
State has decided to suspend since 2019 and which could, however,
create thousands of jobs for young people in Toliara and work for
businesses in the region.
“There are more supporters than opponents of this project and behind
these opponents are politicians in particular,” said Senator Tsiebo Mahaleo,
supported by Senator Nicolas Rabemananjara who pleaded for the reopening of
Base Toliara. “Discussions with the first managers of the Base Toliara
company are already taking place. They are in Madagascar at the moment
and the opening of the mining company is in progress,” Minister of Mines
Olivier Herindrainy Rakotomalala subsequently responded to them.
In any case, the State intends to pull out all the stops to achieve
this objective. In the next hundred days, the decree implementing
the mining code will be adopted as well as the status of the Bureau
of Geology and Gemmology of Madagascar (BGGM) and the mining laboratory.
A sanitation plan which will be used in the processing, by the Madagascar
Mining Cadastre Office (BCMM), of mining permit applications, is
also in preparation.
