Hi Spid, on the matter of rehabilitating mined out pits and returning to natural state it almost never happens. Generally it is only open cast coal mines that are backfilled. The flat dipping coal is exposed in strip's with the overburden cast into the adjacent mined out strip mine. In hard rock open pits they are generally fenced off and allowed to fill with water. The waste dumps are not pushed into the open pit but rather shaped with dozens to look like natural landforms and covered with seeded topsoil.
