The water from pit mining is just groundwater and not rainwater. The pit water is therefore saline and can’t be pumped into the river. Even if it was fresh water, you still struggle to get permission to discharge it into a stream or river. The EPA and/or Mines Department generally don’t allow it or allow it only under very strict conditions. Issues are: change of river habitat, water turbidity, etc. You can’t compare it to a farmers dam overflowing.
