Rob, they won't be using a battery, trust me, most likely a jaw crusher and then maybe even a gyro after that. Jaw will produce fines of all sizes below and upto the set gap ,,. but reading between the lines I'd say that the stone (quartz is either very friable or crushed to some extent, being in a fault etc or maybe there is pug in the stone which carries au and the bulk may be 'washed' and then the remaining stone put through the grinding circuit.
