Apparently they use a pricing method that primarily refers to an ‘international pricing’ reference, i.e. lithium chemicals pricing going into Japan and Korea. In the last nine months this price has been higher than that within the China domestic market. In contrast, Pilbara Minerals uses a pricing method that in the majority references China domestic pricing. This explains the higher price received by Mineral Resources. Over at least the last five years (with the exception of the last nine months), China domestic pricing has always been higher than the international price. Furthermore, virtually all of the spodumene produced is consumed in China, which is therefore a much more natural pricing reference for a Chinese customer of spodumene. While the current difference appears unusual, we don’t think it is reflective of the long-term pricing dynamics and we should see Minerals Resources’ ore price and the price received for Pilbara Minerals’ product get much closer over time.
