The shorts are active which means the institutions and funds are getting in, shorting is a way to create volatility and volume and scare the retail investors out. ALK has a large percentage of retail shareholders, that is now starting to change. ​

Those guys want retail holder's stock. ​

By depressing the price prior to news such volume is usually a good indicator.​
