I don't think this was a good result. OK would be my assessment.
Shareholders in NHC are left in the dark.
"Thermal coal prices reaching record highs following the Russian invasion of Ukraine and concerns
around global energy security. Quarterly gC NEWC finishing at US$404.99/t." That's about $A550 per tonne!
Unlike other listed coal miners who declare what the average NEWC price for the quarter was , NHC gives the finishing price.
DAH! BHP ( see annual report item 10.3 ) states that average price for metallurgical coal for Full Year 2022 was US$347 per tonne. that is almost A$ 500 per tonne.
The weather was bad for NHC operations so we are told. During HY1 some 745,000 tonnes of coal were sold each month. (4,470,000 for 6 months). During HY2 the average was 600,000 tonnes per month.
When we look at the 4,000,000 tonnes per week of coal leaving Newcastle , at 150,000 tonnes , NHC is a bit player.
If the weather fines up , the best we could hope for is 4,400,000 tonnes of sold coal during 2023. "Hope"fully as BHP predicts prices will hold for 2023 , so that year ,2023 , will be a better year.
Finally NHC always show EBITDA data , this company has no debt, has written off almost everything so why use this nebulous non- IRS measurement ?
