To clarify my ‘historical’ reference above, there was a Japanese-controlled rare earth mine in Malaysia decades before our founding Chair and CEO Nick Curtis was persuaded by the Malaysian PM to build the LAMP in Kuantan with Japanese funding. Unfortunately that mine did have significant levels of radioactivity in its products AND tailings, and that led to subsequent disputes. I understand that this led to the setting of the current ridiculously low NORM threshold.
Obviously a great pity the Lynas Board didn’t examine this risk at the time!
