Contrarian view - if most shares on the ASX are going down on a given day due to a bad night on the Dow then investors are more likely to head towards a copper miner that has just put out a positive announcement before the start of trading, whereas if everything is going across the ASX then they have far more options to look at - not just the copper miner with a good announcement

Either way however depends on management bothering to actually release a bloody announcement instead of telling us in the next quarterly "Oh by the way we fixed the problem with the tailings filter press back in May"
