if you've had any experience with diabetic wounds you'll understand they are not apples to apples. Size of wound, lifestyle factors, age, amputations, how well they manage their diabetes etc all play a significant role. for the trial to be run well all these factors need to be considered to 'standardise' the enrolment.
If you consider that most diabetic wounds are often caused by being unable to manage their condition you'll understand how essential it is to have a 'standardised patient' for clinical follow-ups etc.
