I reckon that given MKG has missed the drilling season they are opening up this trench so the artisanal can see where the high grade gold veins are. They know the artisanal move on any area they drill, so I reckon they are doing it to provide visibility to artisanal and will then step back for the rest of the year and let them strip the area and follow all the veins and deplete them to 40 odd meters. That way they will understand the geology prior to drilling.
Might make the land holders less grumpy at the well ceremonies if they are get more money from the artisanal on 'their' land.

This is the way leftists imagine an economy working after all.
