Build and hold deviated wells are about as simple as it gets. That said even though the trajectory might be simple there are sometimes facts beyond your control that will make the job more difficult. Sometimes the formation will force a bit to go in a certain direction...this can be due to bedding planes or other structural features.

One major development with deviated drilling has been the advent of rotary steerable assemblies. Unlike the old method of drilling with a downhole motor incorporating a bent sub and the drill string remaining stationary while steering, a rotary steerable assembly is rotating all the time. This increase overall ROP and reduces the risk of getting stuck while the string is staionary.
