Credit cards were originally only issued to wealthy people and businesses. The primary purpose was to allow executives to have very high (typically equivalent to tens of thousands of dollars in modern terms) amounts of credit to cover business expenses without carry large amounts of cash. It also allowed travelers to use their existing store credit out of town. CC were never intended for small purchases or splitting payments. It took several decades before they were issued to ordinary people.
