In my view Rudd missed a perfect opportunity with his wasted spending of billions of dollars within Australia. What changes could have occurred should he have spent some on encouraging the average car owner to convert to gas? By building gas fired electricity power stations on the east coast, and especially in NSW which cannot produce enough electricity and has to import from across the border from Victoria. By paying for and developing a huge gas pipeline system feeding the larger cities of regional as well as coastal cities, including Sydney and Newcastle, wouldn't they actually do some of the nation building infrastructure they they aspire to doing?
Should this have occurred how much green house emissions would have been saved? How much money would the federal government have generated back to the tax payers by charging for the taking the gas from the producers to the end users? How much would the environmentally conscious people have admired them? How many jobs would have been created by developing this infrastructure?
Certainly would have give the csm from ESG and other NSW producers a large and local commercial user base. Would also have provided gas to be collected from a number of producers for a NSW coal train from perhaps Newcastle for overseas export. Worthy of thought perhaps. Bernie
