Prolia is hugely prescribed. Not uncommon at all in osteopenic women.

The problem comes when need to say remove a tooth, anything where bony healing is required. Risks and management are very well understood by dentists.
Prolia slows the rate of bone turnover, thus preserving bone or tipping the forces causing bone loss back in favour of retaining bone- by decreasing the bony turnover and nett bone loss which was occurring. In layman’s, simple terms and understanding.
Specialist care is often advised if a procedure involving bone in any way is required, but still the risks are low if patients overall health is otherwise good. Treatment is usually minimised as any treatment should be - anything only done when really necessary and emphasis on prevention and good health maintenance care only.

Cancer patients most at risk. Many women are on Prolia type drugs post breast cancer remission- the drugs also slow or prevent recurrence of the cancer in the years subsequently.

Women do not stay on prolia or usually these types of drugs are discontinued after a period of time or years. Maybe restarted but a drug holiday taken, as benefit not there with continual use and adverse effects + risks increase.
Many people are managed by specialist dentists for ongoing ostenecrosis in the jaw (although ONJ is not common) and the area kept clean and managed. Usually these patients also have cancer or a significant life- limiting auto immune condition with multiple sequelae which lead to the non- healing jaw area eg after a tooth is removed or other invasive procedure. Medical professionals are very aware of the risks with surgery if required.
It is sad but their lives also maintained by medication that on. These people are very unwell.

I am sorry to hear of your Mums situation without knowing any facts. Can only hope she is receiving good care and able to live without great discomfort ( again not knowing anything about her or what has happened )
This class of medication and drug is very much prescribed however, albeit should be a checklist before giving for especially if other treatment is needed - scheduled in window of time many months after injections or all done before commencing Prolia injections treatment.
