The comment made in the Geology section of todays announcement finally vindicates what I have been alluding to this past 18 months or so, that is, the origin of the nickeliferous orebody is the result of weathering of more traditional phases within ultramafic hosts, in this case they are saying silicates. Nothing out of the ordinary in this respect and its similar to many, possibly most, lateritic/saprolitic orebodies across the globe. Nothing to do with sulphides. This information ( ie, silicate origin) should have been advised years back based on straightforward petrological studies ( labs available in Perth do this). I have posted several times on the apparent lack of info regarding whether or not petrological studies were undertaken of the drill cores or drill chips. Consequently, it seems many folks have simply assumed that sulphides were present and indeed, that the conductor plates were possibly sulphide accumulations. Hmmmm
As to todays JORC the size/tenor of the orebody is not in my view anything out of the ordinary, and is dwarfed by some other lateritic orebodies that remain undeveloped or mining of them has been mothballed due economics ( Ravensthorpe in WA). Whether or not the direct nickel extraction process that is being touted around the industry is workable for Quicksilver remains to be seen, but conventional extraction methods are very expensive ( capex/opex). Proving up the direct nickel process technology in-situ, and a sustained increase in the nickel price, are pre-requisites going forward I reckon. That could be years away. Yeh, I know, EV batteries switching more to nickel, yabbah yabbah , maybe so, but we are talking years.
I'm wondering now if the "hunt for sulphide" headlined a while back has now gone cold, given silicate weathering is now stated to be the origin of the supergene nickel
Interested in other's views,. Am sure Mr Wot will have something to say !!
