The deal was done with City of Hope, not the scientists themselves. I’m not in the scientific community, but would imagine like any business, it’s needs to raise money to pay for these scientists and I would imagine to some extent, if the money is coming from a particular area, ie RAC, then it’s easier for COH to justify allocating research staff to continue work in that area
