Yes, buying now is much better than buying when the SP is $4.50 or more, even if you're spending the money you had set aside for options conversion. You can always sell RAC to convert, even if you had originally intended not to.
The more interesting comparison is between buying shares now and buying the same dollar value of options now. But the unlisted options market is very illiquid.
