I'm still thinking about this.
AFAIK an abstract is a summary of their proposed presentation which a participant sends to the conference organisers well in advance.
The organisers then decide on the level of that person's participation, ranging from prestigious keynote speaker in the main conference room in an early timeslot before everyone is pissed, down to a A4 poster in the corridor of an annex to be presented at 5 pm on the last day.
So every potential participant sends in an abstract to start with.
The losers get to present only posters.
