Yep I live in Cromwell area short 15 min drive to Tarras ... we have thousands of Hectares of barren rocky dry (very low rainfall) here (I should know I ride my dirt bike over much of it you can ride for hours in many directions and not see anything but rabbits and rocks) ..even much of the farmland is pretty unproductive Vs mining ....
we have more than enough wineries ..and never far from main roads ... Rise and Shine is up the back of ranges very few locals would even have been to..
I heard to own a winery worth 4mill-5mill you first need to blow Millions more >>> most just rich lifestyle operations
Orchards can do well esp Cherry ,,but weather this last season I wouldn't think there was many that made much of a profit Vs costs to run..we only get around 400mm rain pa ... thats near on semi desert levels (200-400mm pa)
No I agree with others ..99% locals and Govt would be behind a profitable Gold mine as long as its not on their doorstep...
Geez we live right next door to a pretty large Quarry which is also right beside the lake .. you can also see Cherry Orchard right next door to residential personal the noise from the Chopper during Cherry season are worse that minor Quarry noise of trucks plant operating ... I don't know of anyone living here that has any issues with the Quarry mine >>
