I worked in the Murchison Gold Fields WA 30yrs ago and some open pit mines then were breaking even at 2.5 grams a tonne, some of the old tailings had more grams/tonne than the pit, the reasoning for mining these low grades was, there was the chance that they would hit a rich ore body deeper down. Also, processing technology has improved a lot since then but costs have risen...
