I agree this is just an extension of the old white or red muscle fibre arguement - I cannot even remember whether which was for sprinting or endurance: but its a lot less painful to have a blood test than muscle biopsy. The other factor is that athletic ability is CLEARLY polygenetic: put this and other genetic markers on a microarray assay and you gat a PROFILE that may be suited to specific activity.
Interestingly, gtg have received royalties from companies making microarrays: so they win both ways.
