"Syntonic's recent moves to position itself for a strong push into Southeast Asia shows that data-monetization creativity continues to thrive most in emerging mobile markets – in this case, via sponsored data. It makes sense. With ARPUs in the single digits, operators in such regions need help – from brands looking to connect with mobile consumers – to drive significant uptake of mobile data services. The challenge there, however, will be finding sponsors willing to target consumers without much disposable income to begin with. The proposition – and opportunity – is much different in premium mobile markets such as the US, Western Europe and Japan. There, the sponsored-data incentive is not basic access but helping to defray the cost of high-bandwidth video streams, which can quickly eat up end-user data tiers. But the challenges are just as real, including end-user understanding and acceptance of sponsored data, and the potential for strong net neutrality objections. Syntonic, along with a handful of upstart competitors, has put the pieces in place for operators that want to test out sponsored-data economics"
