Barnacles, I've shared before and was called an Ape. But that's the internet I suppose. It's a long story and is as much about a not untypical poor surgical result.

I was an avid amateur boxer (amongst other sports) and ruptured my bicep tendon boxing. Due to medical incompetency (even with ultrasound a radiographer couldn't determine if ruptured despite it being off the bone - I could diagnose the injury myself now physically in seconds) and a busy Surgeon scehule I didn't have in repaired for 4 weeks oblivious to the effects. The tendon dies, more has to be cut away and a fairly large tight bicep recoiled up the arm. Get any tendon surgeries as soon as possible people.

Accordingly surgery was difficult and the repair poor. Months later my Surgeon was indifferent and I was still in a great deal of pain. I did rehab under a Physio who had never seen that injury (get a Surgeon who works with a physio in any tendon repair people).

Basically six months later I was still in a great deal of pain, lame (could not drive) and unable to lift more than 3KG without excessive pain. I got two second opinions from two Surgeons. One wanted to do an allograft (take a tendon from somewhere else and do a graft) whilst the other took one look at the MRI I'd managed to get and told me the tendon was "hanging on by a thread" and the endobutton from the repair pressing against a nerve - any surgery risked nerve damage. I now know it's very rare to get such an honest opinion from an Ortho" Surgeon with litigation etc. He was decently honest and despite being one of the most respected shoulder and elbow surgeons in Sydney said the risks were too great for a second surgery. I was in despair and asked him what I could do. He initially advised learning to live with a semi-disability. Then he mentioned he heard of a company doing stem cells in Perth.

it took months of effort my end and literally pleading for a referral and I had to fly to Melbourne from Sydney twice to the radiologist that did it it the time (you can now get it done via a variety of radiologists and sports specialists in most major cities and I am hoping the company will publish a list on its website soon).

Quick biopsy, a six week wait and a relatively painless injection into the damaged tendon. Within weeks I could feel the tendon pain much diminished and strength returning. I worked up through 2Kg to 8Kg with isometric and then eccentrics over 12 weeks. I'd planned to go slower but the recovery was that quick. I then slowly returned to the gym, surfing and golf with a great deal of precaution. After some 7 months of semi disability I was able to do things like drive and pick up a small kettle a month after ATI. Within 4 months I was surfing and golfing with the biggest grin on my face.

Perhaps unwisely for some internet commentators I now even hit the punch bag (I don't spar, too risky) and regularly curl 10KG and eccentrically drop 12.5 KG if that is any indication of the regenerative power of ATI. Like any tendon repair an ATI repair needs to be slowly rehabbed for optimal results. Tendons need progressive controlled loading to strengthen. But as Daniel Kerr showed. You can even return to explosive loads, though personally I am always a little guarded given my history.
