Olympic Dam is a world-class breccia-hosted iron-oxide copper-gold-uranium ore deposit located in the Gawler Craton, South Australia. It contains elevated concentrations of rare earth elements ('REE') which occur as the REE minerals bastnäsite, synchysite, florencite, monazite and xenotime.

Despite this considerable endowment, no REE are currently recovered at Olympic Dam, or elsewhere in the Olympic Cu Province. This is primarily due to relatively low REE grades, small grain size of host minerals, their dissemination throughout the deposit, and the dominance of LREE (light rare earth elements) over the more economically attractive HREE (heavy rare earth elements) .





I read an old Teale paper recently where he said "Allanite and sphene, the dominant carriers of REE at Kalkaroo". So I am not surprised with the high HREE assay results at West Kalkaroo.

The full quote from page 179 if anyone is interested is "Allanite and sphene, the dominant carriers of REE at Kalkaroo, are rare at North Portia being replaced by various REE fluocarbonates, rutile and monazite."

The COVID-19 pandemic in China has had a foreseeable but unintended consequence.  There is an urgency now for the creation of a total domestic REE end-use product supply chain in Australia (maybe in South Australia).  The anchor of any such supply chain is a working mine.
