It was December 2010 when he accepted a deal to give up voting rights for his chunk of the company – about one-third – in return for raising $3 million from a group including former stevedoring boss Chris Corrigan and Ross Smyth-Kirk, who these days is the chairman of goldminer Kingsgate and still a top 20 shareholder of USCOM.The tightly held share register had always featured high-profile names, like former News Corp executive Gary Davey and veteran stock picker Laurence Freedman. But Phillips says while people like Davey, Freedman and ResMed co-founder Colin Sullivan had provided great mentorship, he regretted teaming up with his latest partners.Phillips is reluctant to delve back into the details, but says he disagreed with the company’s new strategy and so engineered a coup. Although USCOM was trying to extricate itself from the Spacelabs contract, the relationship between the two groups was intact. A vote-less Phillips persuaded Spacelab and other shareholders to vote against the re-election of two directors at the company’s November 2011 annual general meeting. The company secretary promptly resigned and a recently installed chief executive left soon after.
