Generally , one wants to be classified as a trader when he makes losses so that he can offset them against say salary . When one has held shares for more than a year and in the black you obviously would want to be an investor for tax purposes. Unfortunately one can not choose .....if you lodged a return as a trader in 2017 then IMHO you can claim the loss from BIG in COGS calculation in 2018 ....
