If you owned the shares through an investment trust, but also maintain a seperate SMSF, could the investment trust sell the shares off market to the SMSF, and thereby the investment trust realise a capital loss? I can't see why not.
Further if by some miracle the shares have some value in the future, your SMSF will then have some shares with a value and saleable.
