What I got out of this talk is that one doubts that it’s tough but everything can ‘change in a heart-beat’!
IMO, China's dominance in the graphite market, particularly for battery-grade graphite, has made it difficult for new suppliers to gain traction due to a combination of factors, including China's control over both natural and synthetic graphite production, pricing manipulation, and trade protections. Addressing this requires a multi-pronged approach, including working with like-minded governments to set the scene for diversifying supply chains and potentially implementing trade policies to level the playing field, ie recent Government discussions with Korea and Japan. Interesting that Albo’s first trip as the new government will be to Indonesia and others in the South East pacific region where development is growing fast.
This is all happening faster now with US-China tensions. As DC stated in the webinar - 'things can change in a heart-beat!' With recent US tariffs and investigations into Chinese antidumping and unfair pricing practices on graphite due, EU policies that are designed to change its reliance on China's dominance, and what the Australian Government aiming to do with a stockpile reserve, the stage is set to speed up this paradigm shift.
Interesting to hear DC’s comment that the graphite market is not yet mature. With some analysts and new players like SYR and WKT struggling to get a firm grip on pricing, which has deterred further investment. However, DC stated in the webinar - ‘we are only at the beginning.’
What is a given is that countries will need to actively diversify their graphite supply sources. Renascor's timely cash raising and reserved commitments has put it in a great place to benefit.
