I'll elaborate on this - before now - nobody knew if the etch was just introducing a poorly conducting layer, or if it was ruining the cells entirely. Well, they know now it's the former. Maybe now they have some etch options that they couldn't use until now, out of fear of destroying the underlying cells. All speculation.
