this is my very basic understand too. i don't get why it is more complicated than that. you buy the shares before the ex date and you will be entitled to whatever the stock comes with when that ex date comes along. if it's already the ex date then you don't get any entitlements. the "settlement" date is simply for exchanging $$ it's nothing to do with ownership
