Android based is because I'd expect it to integrate the actual phone to it. Android gives the programmer a lot flexibility with integrating. You'd be silly to integrate an iphone in it and I think Apple wouldn't allow it easily.

This device I expect would encompass a rugged phone with a SIM card for your world area ready to go for you to use.
