There is no answer. My best guess is he was no good and is being replaced by someone who can handle the job. He was too green, pretty hard to run an international expanding retail business with only 5 years experience. They can't say he is no good, so they say personal reasons. That's the most likely scenario.
The other scenarios are he has been caught doing something he shouldn't be doing and has been turfed, he is a baby and was homesick as suggested, he didn't like the job and left, or couldn't get on with the boss so was turfed/left.
