there has been no mention of "gardening leave" which is what normally happens if things have gone sour and people being relieved of their post are placed in a holding pattern. normally done in a competitive sense so they just don't off and take clients with them etc. I doubt this is the case here.

I am worried that personal reasons may include an ill family member which precludes him from travelling and therefore half his job.

who knows. I'm don't think this is sinister and that yesterday was just a surprise and a shock for us who have come to like his way of doing things.
