Long termers will likely remember that this is not the first time that a TO offer has been floated.
Some time ago a hedge fund was interested in buying TFC. From memory, the transaction was not progressed to a definitive stage whereby public disclosure was required/ warranted. I believe that the two parties failed to agree on a price for the Company.
Maybe this time will be different. I would think that the holders of those 56.5m shorts may be sweating a little this morning (unless there is indeed a conspiracy theory in play).
