I'm not surprised he left. If you think about it, Clay is the obvious successor to Andrew when he retires. So for Joseph to get promoted he would have to wait for the only two blokes in front of him to retire. Not exactly an exciting career path ahead.
I don't think there could have been much for them to do to try to keep him.
